On the energy of neutrinos from gamma ray bursts
نویسنده
چکیده
Ultra high energy protons accelerated at the shocks causing gamma ray bursts photoproduce pions, and then neutrinos in situ. I consider here the sources of losses in this process, namely adiabatic and synchrotron losses by both pions and muons. When the shocks under consideration are external, i.e., those between the ejecta and the surrounding interstellar medium, I show that neutrinos produced by pion decay are unaffected by losses; those produced by muon decay, in the strongly beamed emission required by afterglow observations of GRB 971214, are limited in energy, but still exceed 10 eV . In particular, this means that ultra high energy neutrinos will be produced through afterglows. High-energy neutrinos from gamma ray bursts.
We treat high-energy neutrino production in gamma ray bursts (GRBs). Detailed calculations of photomeson neutrino production are presented for the collapsar model, where internal nonthermal synchrotron radiation is the primary target photon field, and the supranova model, where external pulsar-wind synchrotron radiation provides important additional target photons. Detection of greater, similar...
متن کاملNeutrinos from Gamma Ray Bursts
We show that the detection of neutrinos from a typical gamma ray burst requires a kilometer-scale detector. We argue that large bursts should be visible with the neutrino telescopes under construction. We emphasize the 3 techniques by which neutrino telescopes can perform this search: by triggering on i) bursts of muons from muon neutrinos, ii) muons from air cascades initiated by high energy g...
متن کاملOn the observability of high-energy neutrinos from gamma ray bursts
A method is presented for the identification of high-energy neutrinos from gamma ray bursts by means of a large-scale neutrino telescope. The procedure makes use of a time profile stacking technique of observed neutrino induced signals in correlation with satellite observations. By selecting a rather wide time window, a possible difference between the arrival times of the gamma and neutrino sig...
متن کاملTeV-PeV Neutrinos from Giant Flares of Magnetars and the Case of SGR 1806-20
We estimate the high energy neutrino flux from the giant flare of SGR 180620 on December 27, 2004, which irradiated Earth with a gamma-ray flux ∼ 10 times larger than the most luminous gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever detected. The Antarctic Cherenkov neutrino detector AMANDA was on-line during the flare, and may either have detected high energy neutrinos for the first time from a cosmic point sour...
متن کاملNeutrinos From Individual Gamma-Ray Bursts in the BATSE Catalog
We estimate the neutrino emission from individual gamma-ray bursts observed by the BATSE detector on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. Neutrinos are produced by photoproduction of pions when protons interact with photons in the region where the kinetic energy of the relativistic fireball is dissipated allowing the acceleration of electrons and protons. We also consider models where neutrinos a...
